Obama plans five town-hall-type events next week

  • President Obama will be taking more than a few questions next week from Americans in the Upper Midwest.

Obama has four scheduled town halls during his bus trip though Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois, and also plans to take questions at a Rural Economic Forum in Peosta, Iowa.

The bus tour gives Obama a chance to "hear from Americans in local communities about how the difficult economic recovery has impacted them in their community and their businesses," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

The trip starts Monday and ends Wednesday.

The president expects to hear a lot of frustration from people, just as he himself is frustrated over the recent debt-ceiling standoff and continued political fighting over the federal debt, Earnest added.

"There's no question that the president was frustrated that there were a small number of people in Congress who were willing to put their party ahead of country," Earnest said.

Obama, who spent most of July in Washington working on the debt-ceiling debate, told supporters in Michigan he's eager to get out and talk to ordinary Americans. He discussed that desire after saying he would not be calling Congress back into session this month.

"What I figure is, they need to spend more time out here listening to you and hearing how fed up you are," Obama said. "That's why I'm here. That's why I'll be traveling to a lot of communities like this one over the next week. That's what Congress should be doing -- go back home, listen to people's frustrations with all the gridlock."
